Understanding Roblox DevEx: What Your Robux Is Actually Worth

A clear breakdown of the Roblox Developer Exchange (DevEx) program: exchange rates, eligibility requirements, taxes, and what freelancers should know before cashing out.

If you're getting paid in Robux for your work, understanding DevEx (Roblox's Developer Exchange program) is essential. Here's a plain-English breakdown of how it works and what to watch out for.

The basics

DevEx lets eligible Roblox developers convert Earned Robux into real currency. The current exchange rate is $0.0038 USD per Robux (0.38 cents), following a rate increase Roblox introduced in September 2025.

That means:

  • 10,000 R$ → $38 USD
  • 100,000 R$ → $380 USD
  • 1,000,000 R$ → $3,800 USD

You can use RoHire's DevEx Calculator to convert any amount instantly, including to non-USD currencies.

Eligibility requirements

Not everyone can cash out. To use DevEx, you need:

  • At least 30,000 Earned Robux in your account (Robux you purchased does not count)
  • A verified email address
  • To be 13 or older
  • A DevEx portal account (separate from your Roblox account)
  • Tax forms on file (W-9 for US developers, W-8BEN for international)

Roblox Premium membership is not required; that requirement was removed in early 2022.

The hidden cost: taxes

DevEx income is taxable in most jurisdictions. As of 2026, Roblox will issue a 1099-NEC form to US-based developers who receive $2,000 or more in a calendar year (up from the previous $600 threshold). However, you're still personally required to report self-employment income above $400 regardless of whether you receive a form, so don't treat the $2,000 threshold as a tax-free limit.

A rough rule: If you're in the US and in a 22% tax bracket, $3,800 in DevEx income nets you roughly $2,960 after federal tax, before state taxes.

The payment timeline

DevEx payouts are not fast. The realistic end-to-end timeline from submission to money in your account is:

  • Roblox review: 5 business days (10 for first-time submissions)
  • Tipalti processing (Roblox's payment processor): 1–3 business days
  • Bank transfer / PayPal: 3–7 additional business days

Total: expect 8–15 business days from submission. During high-volume periods it can take longer. Don't submit a DevEx request if you need the money urgently.

What this means for freelancers

If you're accepting Robux as payment for freelance work, factor in the effective USD rate when quoting. A client offering 50,000 R$ is offering roughly $190 USD at current rates, before taxes and before the wait.

For context on typical freelance rates in the Roblox ecosystem, browse current listings on RoHire to see what studios are offering for your role.

The alternative: USD payments

Many studios now pay in USD directly (via PayPal, Wise, or bank transfer), bypassing DevEx entirely. This is almost always better for developers: you get full value immediately, skip the exchange rate haircut, and don't wait two weeks. If you have the choice, take USD.
